Countering hate in Newcastle

Saturday 23rd of August saw Majority members stand their ground once more against anti-refugee protests in Newcastle for the fourth week running.
Coordinating with Stand Up to Racism and Newcastle Unites, Majority has shown solidarity and love for the refugees and asylum seekers housed in a city centre hotel which has become the target of an emboldened and increasingly visible Far Right.
We have been witnessing a relentless weaponisation of the insecurity felt by many, along with the deflection of real issues brought on by a predatory economic system - instead placing the blame on those fleeing conflict or otherwise looking to start a new life here in the UK.
The North East is sadly not immune to the influence of this movement.
Now more than ever, there is a vital imperative to build communities and grow solidarity among the left-leaning groups of the region, and the counter demos Majority has helped cultivate are a promising start.
Through communication and comradeship, what began as a hasty and reactive response to a Far Right demonstration on the 2nd of August has grown into a cohesive, consistent and diverse signal that the people of Newcastle won't let their city be represented by those with bigoted ideals dressed up as 'legitimate concerns'.
Geordies and our allies have shown up week after week, rain or shine, to show asylum seekers and refugees the real face of our city.
There's still a lot of work to be done however, and we welcome Majority members, friends, colleagues and comrades to join us for music, chants, DIY placards and a space to share ideas and grow a movement while expressing love and fellowship for those who have faced unimaginable hardship.
