We Need Something New in Sunderland. Help Majority Build It.

Jamie Driscoll | Published on 4/16/2025

It doesn’t matter whether you’re interested in politics, politics is interested in you. It affects the rent you pay on your home or whether your kids will ever afford a mortgage. If you fall ill or have an accident, it affects whether you can live in dignity, or are abandoned to poverty. It affects our Metros and our buses. Our kids’ schools. Small business owners outcompeted by global giants who don’t pay their taxes. Our university debts just for learning the skills our country needs to survive.  Our electricity bills. Our water bills. Our pension rules being changed.

There was a time when Labour stood up for working people. They are now run by people who take dodgy donations and cut the taxes on tech billionaires, while hiking our council taxes. They boot out anyone who tries to keep them honest. Farage and co are fake supporters of working people – they voted against improving workers rights, and want to privatise the NHS. Their support for oligarchs like Putin and Trump shows their true colour.

We need something new. Majority has set up in the North East. It started with people who supported Jamie Driscoll’s campaign for independent North East Mayor. We want to elect people of integrity and competence – Jamie took £0 in expenses as North of Tyne Mayor.

We believe in giving people a direct say. That all manifestoes should be developed with input from citizens assemblies. We believe all politicians should be accountable, and speak to public meetings about their decisions.

Majority Sunderland will be driven by Sunderland people. There will be no party HQ telling people what they can and can’t do. What there will be is support and training for people who want it. For people who want to stand in the 2026 local elections and start to turn the tide. It won’t happen overnight. But it needs to start now.

Government after government has run Britain in the interest of very, very rich people. Key services run for profit not public good. Public cash funnelled upwards to billionaires. We need a wealth tax so money is invested, not hoarded.

Let’s be clear that this is a progressive movement – it’s about dignity, equality and freedom to prosper, whatever your creed, colour or lifestyle. We are not interested in division and scapegoating.  One community, working for the common good.

We’re starting with a discussion to see who wants to be involved. Jamie Driscoll will be speaking.

Join us at the Fans Museum on Saturday 26th April, 5pm.  North Bridge St, Monkwearmouth, Sunderland SR5 1AP. Near St Peter’s Metro.
